ACCUSED COMMITTED FOE
TRIAL

Further evidence was taken yesterday afternoon before Mr 11. W. Brabant, SM., in tlie cliar S e a S' aillst a chemist's assistant named Daniel Vinson Dossetor, /performing an illegal operation upon married woman named Isabella MeCallura. The Hon. J. A. Tole (Crown Prosecutor) was for the prosecution, and Mr j C. -Martin defended. " Dr Craig, who assisted Dr. Collin3 in tl l( . operation upon Mrs McCallum, as honorary physician at the Hospital, corroborated Dr. Collins' evidence. Mr A Eccles, chemist, carrying on business'at His' Majesty's Arcade, said i ]m t the accused had been an assistant a-Vis shop for four months. The rooms woken of could be reached without gojrr- through tlie shop, and the accused opened the"place in the morning. When aroused was arrested he told witness that the woman had only been to see him once and that he advised her to see Dr. Goldie. He did not treat her himself. ' Constable William McCarthy, watchhousekeeper, stated that Dossetor, roeaking to him about the case when he. _[ aS arr ested on July 1, remarked that v-ould not have been such a fool to DPrfonu an operation in the presence of a witness, but he absconded, hoping the woman would better and that nothinc more would be heard of the case. ; Detective Henderson spoke to endeav- i oU rin" to confront Airs McCallum with j the accused, who agreed to accompany j him to the Hospital. Witness left Dos- j sotor in the cab outside while he talk- ; e _ with the woman for a few minutes, j -Then he sent out for the accused, but found he had disappeared. They went j at once to his house in Newmarket, and ; searched- it several times without find-! in.- him. Three days later he was found i |n° a house in Manukau-road, Parnell, j ami apprehended on a warrant. He remarked to witness that he. could not be blamed for clearing away from the Hospital because things were beginning to look pretty black against him, be expected to be detained, and wanted to get as much liberty as be could. He was taken to the Police Station, and on the Wtv he said he had had an anxious time. He did not think he had done anything illegal, or anything more than , any other chemist would have done. j Detective Henderson's statement was corroborated by acting-Detective Hollis, I who added that when he was accompanyin- Dossetor to the Hospital he remarked' "This i? what one gets for doing a rood turn." In reply to His Worship, Mr Tole stated that Mrs McCallum was still m the Hospital , hut was progressing favourably. Accused was committed for trial at fie Supreme Court, reserving his defence and pleading not guilty. The hail had been previously fixed at £1000. accused in a surety of £500 and two sureties of £250 each, but Mr Martin asked fern reduction as the amount was prohibitive. His Worship declined, however, to make any alteration.
