HAMILTON, this day

Mr Thomas Bird, road engineer in charge of the Government works of Waikato and the King Country, has been called to Wellington. It is understood there are likely to be some changes in the Departmental staff consequent on the retirement of Captain Turner, of Rotorua.

The annual examination of schoolteachers commenced here to-day, eight males and 15 females presenting' themselves. Mr Crowe is the examiner.
