CANTERBURY COLLEGE BOARD.
CHRSTCHURCH, Monday. At a meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors to-day Mr G." W. Russell gave notice of motion, "That a committee be appointed to consider th.c advisableness of establishing a conservatorium of music in connection with the college, with power to take | the evidence of musical experts and , communicate with other musical institutions." It Avas resolved that the registrar should communicate with the governing authorities of the Dunedin and Nelson High Schools, and inquire what has been their experience of the introduction of the Government scheme of free places into the secondary schools under their control. The opinion was expressed that the Government capitation of £0 was not sufficient to maintain the standard of the high\schools, and that a test, distinct from the sixth standard, should be adopted. The chairman (Mr A. E. G. Rhoues) was empowered to send a deputation to Wellington during the session, if he thought necessary, to interview the Minister for Education.
