HARBOUR BOARD.
A meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr J. T. Julian prdßtfimg. Also present: Messrs J. H. Wlrifcfoitl, M.H.R., F. E. Bauine, M.H.R., 0. W. Basley, A E. Glover, J. A. Walker, 1. M* Laxon, A. Alison, W. J W. Philson, Hon. E. Mitchelson, W. J. Napier, and W. J. Parker.
.' Propose* New Fire Station.—Mr H. W. WorHs and SujJt Committee.—This Committee yi*t the Auckland Provincial Agricultural Association and New 2«al<vnd Fejpers' Union had been nuked to eppresentatives to its next raitejjnjr to discuss the country represenlatlon «ipon the Board. The offer of the "•Birkenhead and Northcote Gas Company for the supply and maintenance of gas lamps on the Northcote and Birkenhead wharves at i<s per annum per light had been accepted. They had decided to dispense with the services of the present keeper of the explosives hulk and advertise for a successor, and had requested Mr Metcalfe to report upon the failure of the electric light at the Calliope Dock. The traffic manager had reported upon the Board's liability in respect to goods lauded on the wharf, and had been instructed uot to assume any responsibility, but to provide gratings and tarpaulins free of charge. The report was adopted.
Finance.—The report of the Finance aud Legal Committee, which was accepted, recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £2944 3/ii, including £1700 to Messrs D. Gouk and Sons, contractors for the extension of Hobsou-street Wharf.
Leases.—lt was decided to insert in the lease of a piece of land in Little Queenstreet tx» the Cuuipbell-Ehroul'ried Company a clause providing for the Board paying half valuation for the buildings at the end of the term, and a similar request from Messrs Dunn, Smith and Co. was referred to the Legal Committee.
Calliope Uock Lighting.—Mr H. H. Metcalfe wrote with reference to the electric lighting at Calliope J.'ock, suggesting that arc lights be tried, ar.J adding that he was afraid the insulation of the wires was damaged during construction through a llaibour Board employee blocking a trench during a rainstorm and causing water to enter the pipes in which the wires were placed. It was decided that the new engineer should report upon the matter.
