YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSO
CIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING,
Thy annual meeting of the Young Women's Christian Association was held in the V.M.C.A. Rooms last evening.
The Secretary read the annual report, which stated that there were 500,000 members, and 5500 branches of the Y.W.C.A. The members could hardly express the regret they felt at the death of Messrs W. S. and J. L. Wilson, who would be very hard to replace. Mrs Comrie, Mrs Hobbs, Mrs Macdonuld (our former secretary), all faithful workers in the highest service, have gone this year to their reward. Their branch of the Mothers' Union had met regularly, and although not large in numbers, was mast regularly attended and appreciated. Last year, at the request of Mrs Glenny, the enthusiastic secretary of the Auckland Mothers' Union, they became an affiliated branch of a which has become a great power in our midst. Much labour was put into it by the late lamented Mrs Cowie. The union will greatly feel the loss of the departure of the President (the Countess of Ranfurly). Great advancement was made in factory work. There was noticeable improvement in the Monday classes, both in number and .interest. They were at present working at the Association. Miss Gleeson kindly held a painting class on Saturday afternoons for those who cared to avail themselves of it. The attendances at the midday lunches had averaged about 58 daily. Reference was also made to the world's conference at Geneva. Thoir time and attention this 3'ear had been very much taken up with the new building. At a meeting it was decided to send out circulars asking the help and. co-operation of all members, and if sufficient practical support was forthcoming, to go on with the purchase. They were enabled to close with the first terms for purchase, and in April the receipt for £500 was handed to the secretary. Tie sum of £70 was netted by a sale of work. This will cover all expenses in connection with the building for the next twelve months. From next year's workings they expect to cover the expense of alteration. As regards the remaining £1800, which is to stand for five years at 5 per cent., they would like 27 gentlemen to lend £50 each, without interest, and in this way they would be able to pay off this sum. Four gentlemen had already volunteered. The institute itself had not paid very well. The statement of accounts showed that there was a credit balance of £12 1/3. The total receipts were £319 0/8. The receipts for the building fund amounted to £594 17/11, and the expenditure was £530 10/, leaving a credit balance of £64 7/11. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Hiater the reports were road at a public meeting held in the Social Hall. Vocal and instrumental items were then contributed by friends of the Association, and the evening was spent in social harrqpny.
