ALLEGED THEFT.

MATHESON BEFORE THE COURT.

At the Supreme Court this afternoon Gordon Bruce Matheson was charged with the theft of -14/, the property of John Reid, while in the employ of John Reid, at Auckland, on or about February 20th last, and also with the theft 'of £ 1 17/, -also the property of John Reid, on or about February 21st last. Accused, who was defended by Mr J. R. Reed, pleaded not guilty..

John Reid, of the firm of John Reid and Co., merchants, was the first witness. He said the accused was in. his employ for some years as collector, and among his duties' was to collect moneys and make returns of these. In Febru ary last accused went to Coromandel and made a return of the moneys hecollected there. In this return a sum of £3 10/ was put down as collected from a Mr Paul, and a sum of £2 from a M r Lynch. The sum of £2 was put on the sheet as accused's expenses. Accused was entitled to expenses. This return was received on February 23. There was a fire on witness' premises on the morning of February 25th. Accused had not accounted to him for more than the sums of £3 10/ and £2 as being received from the parties mentioned.
