ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
It is again our duty to remind the householders of the province of the annual election of school committees, which takes place to-night. We need hardly point out. that the duties of the committees in connection with our educational system are many and important. Not only have they the practical supervision of the material conditions under which teaching is conducted, but they have a great deal to say in the choice of teachers. Our Education Acts allow committees the right to reject any candidates; whom they regard as unsatisfactory, and to limit the Board's final selection to a small number of applicants. In addition to this the committees elect the members of our Board of Education, and through them control the local management of our educational work. Depending for its administration on a popular election, our education system is thus thoroughly consistent wiih the principles of Libe:alLsm, and it is to be regretted that the people as a whole have not shown themselves more appreciative of the comprehensive powers entrusted to their charge in educational matters. It is to be hoped that our householders will be in future fully alive f'fr 'their privileges, and that they will give an emphatic proof that they are anxious to utilise to the best advantage the opportunity thus afforded them of exercising both direct and indirect influence upon the working of our education system. Considering the importance and scope of the work now carried on by our Board of Education, wo regard it as the bounden duty of every householder to take an active interest in it by exercising his vote at the election of committees to-night., :
