BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
i The last meeting of the Council prior to the elections was held on Thursday evening. Cr. White stated that he had. waited upon the Council's solicitor in the matter of the leasing of the Birkenhead Domain, and Mr Button had replied that under certain clauses of the Act the Council could not lease it for a period of three years. The matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. Complaint was made that several persons had left long stumps when cutting down gorse, especially on Chelsea-road. It was decided to draw the attention of those concerned to the state of affairs. Mr Metcalfe, C.E., wrote that he was prepared to draw up a water scheme for £20 A committee was appointed to confer with the Northcote Council before authorising Mr Metcalfe to proceed with the scheme.
Mr Basley wrote declining any responsibility in the matter of Basley's crossing. Referred to the Works' Committee, with power to act. Dr. Carolan, the Health Officer, wrote that there had been four cases of poisoning in the Borough. Cγ. White moved that a strip of land be taken off the town hall site for the purpose of widening that road. The motion was seconded by Cr. Kay, but opposed by other members of the Council, and eventually lost. The Mayor said the Council had every reason to congratulate themselves on the works accomplished while they were in office. The finances were in a highly satisfactory position, the Borough holding the unique position of being in the best financial status of any other corporation. Cγ Kay drew attention to circulars issued by the Ratepayers' Association, which he declared contained misleading statements.
