Our Kawakawa correspondent telegraphs that a complimentary banquet is to be tendered to Mr. Houston, the member for the Bay of Islands, to-night. From the number of tickets sold it appears that it is going to be enthusiastic and well patronised. Regr .t is felt that Mr. Seddon could not send a Minister to be present. Mr. Mander, M.H.R. for Marsden, has been incited to attend.
A Melbourne file of Tuesday last says
—"Tenders are stated to be going in with fair freedom for the Metropolitan Board of Works 4 per cmt. loan of £1,140,000, the list for which closes on the 23rd inst. There appears to be a good deal of money awaiting investment at 4 per cent, which is, on security of this description, a substantial rate. It is likely that holders of the 5 per cent, loan falling due on Ist October will exercise their option of taking up the new debentures freely. Other 4 per cent, loans offering at the present time are meeting with fair support. New Zealand continues to sell 4 per cent, debentures due 1908, with interest and principle payable here; while the Queensland issue of Treasury bills, with 10 yeara' currency and 4 per cent, interest, is not yet withdrawn, the price of issue being 102 gross, inclusive of accrued interest."
A REMINISCENCE OF AUSTRALIA.
Bufih Magistrate (to visiting magistrates, who have had a wild night): "Look here, fellers, befure we go on wid this case, where the devil did yo git t* whin oi missed yo last noightf*
