POLICE COURT—THIS DAY

Two Charges.—Michael Kiely pleaded guilty to being drunk in Queenstreet, and also to being found in the Queen's Head Hotel when he was a prohibited person. He pleaded that friends had given him whisky while he was coming down from the King Country by train. There was a long list of convictions against Kiely, who had another charge o? the same, nature as the present to be tried in a few days. Sub-Inspector Black stated that Kiely was one of those men who defied prohibition orders, ancl His Worship imposed a penalty of 5/ for drunkenness, and £1 for the breach of the order. Assault Upon a Stoker.—James Downey was brought up on remand for sentence on a charge of assaulting William Cowan, stoker on H.M.s. Ringarooma, He pleaded guilty, and admitted a list of previous convictions. His Worship remarked that it was a very serious assault, and had the accused gone before the Supreme Court he would have been dealt with very severely. He would be. sent to prison for two months with hard labour. Adjourned: Emma Gerkins was charged on three counts with receiving infants apart from their mothers without being a licensed homekeeper under the Infant Life Protection Act. The police stated that the condition of the defendant's house was such that they would not recommend the granting of a license. As the polico were unable to secure a witness, the case was adjourned for a week. "Drunkenness.— One first-offender was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and Edmond George was fined 5/. He was committed for seven days for Indecency.
