BOY AND GIRL QUARREL.
LEADS TO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE,
The last of the attempted suicide at Newmarket was heard to-day at tho Police Court, before Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M., when a youth named Cyril Alger was charged with that offence. He had been twice remanded.
Sub-Inspector Black represented the police and Mr John Alexander the accused.
Mr Alexander told His Worship that since yesterday he had seen the boy, and from what he had been told, advised him to plead guilty. The accused had not until yesterday disclosed the true facts to his friends. He was feeling out of sorts, and had a sort of "boy and girl" quarrel with his cousin. He was taking a mixture of chloroform £nd belladonna for toothache, and he got a little drop too much into his mouth in order to frighten the girl. As soon as he found it was taking effect he called for a spoon, and the cousin, who wais near, at once administered an emetic and he recovered. He had been very ill since, and realised now the serious nature of what he had done. He had been to South Africa with one of the contingents, f Mr Haselden: And did he drink Ss much whisky as most of them? That might account for it.
Alger replied in the negative, and added that he was a farrier with the Imperial Light Horse in South Africa.
His Worship, remarking that he would not take up time in telling Alger of his folly, released him upon the recognizance of his relatives in the sum of £ 50, that he would be of good behaviour for a year.
