SUICIDAL MADMAN.

IN A PRISON CELL

NAPIER, this day

A man named Stevens, who arrived by the steamer yesterday from Gisborne. attempted suicide by cutting his throat in the police, cell this morning. On the arrival of the steamer yesterday he claimed police protection, and enquiry on board showed that Stevens had been behaving strangely on the voyage down. He was accordingly locked up on a charge of lunacy. He came out of the cell about nine this morning for a wash and returned shortly afterwards, but when the police opened his cell at ten to take him. to the court he was found to have attempted to ctrt his throat with a $ieee of glass. The wound is severe, but i_ not expected to prove fatal.
