GREY LYNN.

The G-rey Lvnn Council met on Monday. Present: Councillors T. Booth, C. McMaster, R Hall, W. White, W. Brinsden, A- Parker, J..Farrell, R. C. Foster, and A- Donald, who presided in the absence of the Mayor. Building Permit.—Mr J. R. Reed wrote on behalf of D. Parker, asking in what respect the council objected to the house in course of erection in Sackville-street. A. letter was also read from Dr. Makgill, District Health Officer, with reference to the house in question, mentioning that unsound material had been used. It was decided to furnish Mr Reed with the information asked for. The Building Inspector reported that J. K. Williams took out a permit for one house in Crummerroad. A second house had, however, been erected without a permit. When his attention was called to the fact, Mr Williams wanted a second permit, which was refused, pending decision of the council. Mr Farrell suggested that the permit should be granted. He said builders often under such circumstances did pot hurry about getting a second permit, although they intended to do so. Mr McMaster said they should back up the Building Inspector. He moved that proceedings be taken under the by-law. This was seconded by Mr Foster, and agreed to.

report of the Finance Committee recommending payment of £592 13/1 was agreed to, also that £50 be spent on urgent drainage work, and that the necessary steps be taken to purchase a eqr&pcr and sweeper. The committee also submitted an Interim report upon the financial position of the borough for the information of councillors. Mi- McMasters suggested that councillors should consider the report very carefully before asking for any. expenditure that was not absolutely- urgent. The overdraft was now over £500. Too much work had been passed to be done, and it was time to study their financial position. Sackville-street.—Mr McMaster drew attention to the dangerous state of Sack-ville-street bridge. On the suggestion of the chairman, the question of permanent repairs was referred to the Streets Committee to report.

Various ininor matters connected with repairs to footpaths were also dealt with before the council adjourned.
