A* JOKE THAT FAILED

It occurred in a railway train the! other day. There were several passengers in the compartment. At one, end sat a "young couple," who ap-« peared to be particularly and, lying between them on the seat, was a pair of dainty gloves, evidently] belonging to the young lady. The young man silently admired those gloves for some time out of the corner of his eye; then, while the young; lady was looking out at the passing country, he surreptitiously annexed one of them and thrust it into hisi pocket, no doubt with the intention; of indulging in a little innocent fun. Shortly afterwards the young ladyj discovered that one of her gloves was amissing, and, on informing her companion of the grievous fact, they botH proceeded to look for it, the young* man now thoroughly enjoying him* .self, although he endeavoured to keep a serious face. "Oh, I'm sure I brought the pair with me," said the young lady, sadly, after they had hunted alf over the compartmenwithout /coming upon the "lost"----glove. "But I'm afraid I must have! dropped the other one on the wayj to the station. And it was a new pair, too!" Whereupon the young man expressed his sympathy. "Well, it can't be helped now," added the young lady; "one glove is of no us© to anybody— so here goes!"
