GRIERSON WINS CHAMPIONSHIP.
DUNEDIN, Saturday
The chess championship tournament concluded to-day, the final round requiting a fellows:—
Balk v. Miles: This was the first and only Evans' gambit of the tourney. Milts replied with a compromised defence. Baih obtained a strong attack, ami forced a "in on the 41st move. Forsyth v. Mason: Mason decl'ned «ngs gambit, and played Falkiner s counts gambit. Forsy.h made a w>.*k inn meve, and his op.-vie.ii devilling an overwhelming attach, Forsyth resigned on the 26th move, and made the chalnpionship a certainty for .Grierson. Grierson v. Kelling: Grierson opened with the Ruy Lopez. After the 18th move Kelling initiated an attack on his-oppo-nent's queen, and after an exchange of a majority of the pieces Grierson's position was hopeless, and he resigned on the oOth move.
Barnes v. Warsaw: After some play Warsaw suggested a draw, but Barnes "wight it a good practice to play out, Ml lad to resign on the COth move. Mwards v. Cashen: The latter played a frencn defence, and scored a somewflat lijcky win after the 08th move.
