INVEECAEGILL, Thursday.

The Otago v. Southland cricket match began to-day on a soft wicket after a night's rain. Southland won the toss and took the field. The umpire (Mr Austin) took exception to some of Bennett's deliveries and noballed him. None of the visitors made a long stand, the innings closing- for 99—Mills 19, Howden 15, Austin (not out) 13, Fisher 13. The Southlanders did still worse, being all out for 57—'Boole 19, Bell 13, Wilson 11.

Otago in their second innings lost two wickets for 72 —Siedeberg 8, Mills 24, Austin, (not out) 40.
