Great credit was'due to the young section of the community for the manner in which they had worked and subscribed to pay 'a'tribute to the honour of their dead cojnrade, and their action formed an example to the whole city, which had been-very backward jin paying tribute to those who had benefited- it. There was one great colonial statesman who. had. greatly benefited Auckland, and .in whose honour the people had erected a memorial. Mr. Carrbll concluded his remarks by expressing sympathy with the relatives of the ■deceased, and hoped that tluit demonstration wduld ■iigfiten'the'' blow arid soften the sorrow which had befallen them.'

Mr. A'.'Kidd, M.H.R.,'was then called upon. , He expressed pleasure at having been given the opportunity of taking part in the sad but interesting function. The memorial-was then unveiled, after which-an adjournment was .made to the Ponsonby Club Hotel, where the. following toasts, were honoured: "The Hon.;: James Carroll," proposed by Mr. Masiefield, and responded, to by theNatiye Minister; "The Visitors," proposed by Mr. S. D. Haniia, and. acknowledged by Messrs. FrLaWry, F. E. Baume and A. Kidd. M.'H.R.V: and "The Scott Family" and the Memorial' Cotnm'ttee," proposed by Mr. W: F; Courtney, and responded to by Mr. J. Scott, brother of : the late' Trooper; Scottr and Mr. Alex. Sneddon, chairman -of the committee. ■ ■?.■:,;.'
