The weather after remaining fine throughout Saturday morning continued its eccentricities in the afternoon, with one of the heaviest thunder showers that. has ever fallen in this part of the country. In a few minutes the streets were flooded, and the channels were running brim high. At the. cycling sports at Lancaster Park those of the spectators who were not sheltered by the stands were soon soaked to the skin. At the various cricket grounds a similar fate overtook both players and spectators. Owing to the Canterbury XI. being absent in Dunedin, the senior cup matches were suspended, but the gap was filled _y a match between teams selected by the Canterbury Cricket Association, and a contest between mixed teams representing the United and Wellington clubs. Both games were begun on Friday and discontinued owing to the Tain. In the EllesmereCanterbury match the latter made 115 (K. Ollivier 50, H. Whitta 36, and Deacon being the only batsmen to reach double figures. Ellesmere made 63 (G. Rhodes 28 not out, being the chief contributor). For Canterbury, Ollivier took four wickets for 11 runs, Tabart three for 8, Brosnahan one for 15, Prebble one for 0, and Ridley one for 14. The successful bowlers for Ellesmere were Flannery three for 25, Lunn three for 9, and Graham two for 27. The match was decided on the first innings, Canterbury winning by 52 runs. Wellington beat United by seven wickets. United made 102 (E. Frankish 42, W. A. Day 24, C. Ollivier 13, H. B. Boddington '11). lington's first Innings realised __>,S. Hickson making 49, R. H. Johnstonl7,M Crombie 16, and T. E. Maunsell 14. United replied with 49 (K. S. Dillon 18), leaving Wellington to get 33 to win. This they accomplished for the loss of three wickets, O. H. Bruce scoring 23 not out. In Unit-" cd's first innings Luckie took Aye wickets for 37, Ashbolt two for 9, McLean one for 14,, and Maunsell one for 22. In the second innings Luckie took nine for 23, and McLean one for 22. In Wellington's first innings Frankish took six for 44, Beckett three for 19, and Dillon one for 24, and in the second innings Boddington secured two for 7, and Frankish one for 19.
