AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB SUMMER MEETING.

The Summer Meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, which opened on Saturday, was largely attended; indeed, there has seldom been a bigger assemblage at Alexandra Park to witness the sport of trotting and pony racing. A very large number of holiday-makers are in Auckland, and the prospect of seeing a lot of visiting horses and good trotting and racing attracted the people, and the improved facilities for getting to the Park materially assisted. The sport was interesting, and there were some fast and

close contests during the afternoon, and the amount of speculation was in excess of any previous showing on any one day at a trotting meeting in Auckland, the sum of £3590 being the turnover in 10/ investments. The stewards of the club were not called together during the afternoon to decide protests, which all too frequently crop up, but they had before them and cautioned three riders in the first race for not riding their horses out. Mr C. F. Mark and staff got through their duties well. Mr A. R. Harris occupied the judge's box, and gave his decisions promptly. In the hands of Mr Edwards (the handicapper) the starting was carried out satisfactorily, and the results generally were no doubt pleasing to that official. Typewriter, by the imported American sire- Albert Victor, won the Maiden Trot with something to spare. The victory of the mare, whose sire and dam have both won races on the same ground, was generally anticipated. There was a capital race for the Pony Trot between the three placed competitors, Bert, Jingo and Sandfly, who were enabled by their starts to keep well in front of the rest of the field, though Victor Hugo went well from his mark for the greater part of the distance. Daphne, the favourite, was giving 20secs to the winner, who was next in demand, and only just succeeded from the Canterbury-bred Jingo. The Lebel pony Belle Cole, hailing from Taranaki, did not handle the turns of the course any too well, but had an easy victory in the Pony Cup from Annoyed, Sentinel, Orange and Blue, and Miss Lane, but narrowly escaped being objected to for crossing. The good field of thirteen went to the post for the Auckland Trotting Club Handicap of 200sovs, King George being made favourite, but this gelding could get no nearer than fourth. Victory rested with the Canterburyowned Australian-bred Van Dieman, a son of Vancleve, who, well handled by McCann, beat the much Improved locallyowned Talhoa by less than ten yards and Bill C, who also gave his best public exhibition in this race, by about forty yards. Several of the starters were unsteady, and may be expected to do better before the meeting is over. Van Dieman had to pace over 20sec faster than his best previous public performance to win. Later in the day, in the first heat of the Great Northern Trotting Handicap, the mile event, when penalised no less than lOsec, he covered the distance in _._. showing consistency, which enabled him to score from, at the handicap, probably as good, though less seasoned, opposition in Durbar, who lost bis feet early in both his essays. The second heat of the Great Northern Trotting Handicap went to Taihoa, the favourite, who led throughout and won by less than half his handicap from Fairy Queen, who paced without a mistake throughout. Rosebud went well to the distance, and Peri Huon knocked off a little of his handicap in the home run. The final heat between the three placed horses in each heat should be worth witnessing. The Middleclass Handicap Trot fell to Czarina, a mare by Electioneer, who was lucky to meet with moderate opposition. The Wai.kato pony Resurgum was in front all the way in the Telephone Handicap, in which there were three more fancied ones, Little Wonder, the favourite, and Ukase of these being unplaced. Results:
