Since the electric cars have been running tbe telephone service has been very much affected, and now that the current is turned on the Newmarket lines tbe efficiency of the telephone service is so seriously impaired as to render it at times almost useless. A tremendous "buzz," which deadens the sound of the voice over the wires, is clearly traceable to the electric tram service, and confirms the prediction that with overhead wires used for both telephones and tramways the telephone service was sure to be seriously impaired. It is evident that something will have to be done to repair this state of things. Immediate steps should be taken to inquire into the best method of avoiding tbe present contact between tbe two sets of wires. It is possible the telephone wires will have to be put underground, though this will involve the expenditure of a substantial sum of money.
