THE GOLDFIELDS.
CHELMSFORD . The mine manager reports that the battery level has now reached a total distance of 553 feet from the mouth. The reef mentioned in my last report, and which has been running on the eastern side o<f. the level, is now being cut thrcugh. In the winze very little sinking has been done during the week. The reef continues a strong body of ore and of fair vaiue. The battery has been running during the week on ore from different parts of the mine, and which has been shaping fairly. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED. ' Work in the mine has been confined to the extension of the crosscut towards the Oddfellows' reef and rising on the ree£ In the east drive. In the latter place the reef when broken down showed some strong colours of gold in the quarts. The reef Is a compact body of stone about eight inches wide, and of a most kindly character. The crosscut for the Oddfellows' is in 91 feet 6 inches, the country being still firm. ' BIG BEETLE. A start has been made to drive on the crosscut. The drive is in very good country full of small stringers, al carrying a little gold. The south-west drive is in 33 feet. A start has been made to. rise on the leader, from which the manager reports that splendid prospects are met with. THAMES TALISMAN. The drive from the main level Is in 57 feet and penetrating good country, in which the manager thinks a reef may be met with at any time. At the surface level a number of quartz leaders have been met with, some averaging six inches in width. The manager thinks a large body has split, up.
