NORTH TRUNK RAILWAY.
The commissioner of tbe Railway League reports that last week he went right through the works on the Main Trunk railway at the North end. The rails are now laid into the Taringamutu station, and this section is now open for goods traffic. It is some eleven miles from Ongaruhe. and close on 25 from the Poro-o-tarao tunnel. They will not be able to lay any more rails till the temporary bridges between the Tnrmgamutu"and Taumarunui stations are completed, but there is little doubt but that the rails will be laid into the latter station before Cnnstmas. The thino- that strikes one most is that there are only a few more mon on now than before the £250.000 was voted, aud tbe very pessimistic tone everrone sterns to have on and about the 'worlcs. The officials are very reticent, but the business peoph- and the few men ou the works I spoke to in most cases did not hesitate to express their drend tha** Ihe whole of the Avorks would be shut down nr Christmas, if not before. There seemed to be no foundation for this feelina- bevoud the fact that £250.000 should'at the least have doubled the number of men employed, and have made a bigger stir than ever, while thines have practically gone ou a-*. Vfore. Others say the Government do not wish to change men from one electorate to another so close to the election. At any rate, whatever is the cause there is no doubt hut at this end of the line the expenditure is much as it was before the big sum was voted.
