HOSPITAL SUNDAY.
THE CHIEF JUSTICE ON SABBATH
OBSERVANCE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Sunday. Some thousands attended the Hospital Sunday demonstration in the Basin Reserve this afternoon. Sir Robert Stout, in the course of an eloquent address, dwelt on the need of the convalescent home for which the demonstration was held. He hoped those unable to give monetary assistance would display their sympathy by helping in other ways. On the subject of Sabbath desecration, he pointed out that the early reformers, Luther and Calvin, Like Bishop Julius, held much more liberal views than many of their successors, and that the Founder of Christianity had told the Jews 1000 years ago that it was lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Sir Joseph Ward subsequently spoke of the deserving- nature of the object and the steps taken by the State in recent years in aid of hospitals. He thanked the people for attending in such large numbers and the different bands for the excellent musical programme provided. Over one hundred bandsment took part.
