(By Telegraph. — Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day
Most of the summer pastimes were begun here on Saturday afternoon. The weather was bright, but a strong north-east gale blew throughout the g-reater portion of the afternoon. The opening of the boating season attracted a large attendance, and there was a considerable gathering at the annual sports of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. The cup cricket competitions opened at Lancaster Park and Hag-ley Park. At the former ground, Lancaster Park met Sydenham and Addington, and ran up 206 (A. E. Ridley 50, Orchard 43, Callaway 49, Wilding 36, and Boxshall 15). McMurray bowled well for Sydenham and Addington. The latter have lost 8 wickets for 44 runs. At Hagley Park, Midlands .scored 212 against United (Strange 40, Bromley 42, Prebble 39, "Wheatley 28, and Garrard 22). Wigley was the most successful United bowler. The United made 11 for no wickets. The bowling clubs also opened their season.
