DROWNING ACCIDENT

A young married man named Charles Davvson, residing in Hobson-street, and employed aa a hairdresser by William Coleman, of Queen-street, was drowned off the steamer Awarua in the Gulf on Sunday evening. It appears that the deceased, with a number of other young men, left town about 11 o'clock on Saturday evening in the Devonport Perry Company's steamer Awanaa on a fishing excursion. The following day they landed on Arid Island, off the Great Barrier. About seven o'clock in the evening the party left on the return trip. When the Awarua was passing the Great Barrier, Dawson was seen by a Mr Jenkr ins, of the North Shore, to mount the paddle-box and thro-w a bucket attached to a rope into the sea, in order, apparently, to get some water. He had a turn of the line round his wrist, and it is surmised that the sudden jerking of the rope caused him to overbalance, for immediately afterwards he fell overboard. The steamer was put back, and although, a diligent search was made no trace of the unfortunate man could be found.
