SWIMMING.
At Vienna, on August 9, Jarvis easily won the Emperor Francis .Toseph's prize for a. mile race in. 25min 55 1-SSPC.
A recognised English authority recently wrote from Berlin as follows: "The' Germans are determined swimmers, good men, and much faster than the English, not reckoning Jarvis. Our speediest racers would have a, tough job to keep level with them. They are surprisingly fast and very strong in the water. For the prestige of England it is fortunate that Jarvis competed." I have jnot^ seen any mention of Jarvis' victories in Germ an v. I
Jarvis competed in a 100 yds scratch race, but was defeated by the German champion, Halmay, of Buda-Pe«t Halmay is said to be capable of swimming 100 yds in Glsee, and may visit England next year. He is also a champion oarsman \ and a first-rate boxer. The German swimmers easily beat the English team at polo.
