NORTHCOTE & BIRKENHEAD
The final social of the Burns Club was held last night in the Gladstone Hall, there being- a very large number present. Dancing was indulged in up to a late hour, and the friends from town returned home by a steamer chartered for the purpose. Musical items were rendered by Messrs. Donovan, Bryant, and W. A. Creswell. Mr. A. Riddel, and Mr. Stewart were the M.C.'s, and Mrs. Stoddart presided at the piano. The pupils f the Mayfield public school were successful in passing at the standard examination just concluded, this being the second year the children have passed in all the standards. The committee sent a letter to the headmaster, Mr. Warn, congratulating him on the very efficient state of the school.
The Mayfield Cricket Club held a concert in the Mayfield Schol last night. There was a large gathering •of residents, Councillor Rennie occupied the chair. Various games were indulged in, and a good musical programme was given as follows: — Overture, Miss Hall; reading, Mr. S. Greaves; recitation, Mrs. E. Grade; song-, Miss Beaver: song, "Coming' Through the Rye," Mr. Downing; reading, Mrs. A. Geddis: violin solo, Miss McArthur; recitation, Mr. Oco. Wilson; song, selected, Mr. Downing; recitation, "The Charge of the Pingpong Craze," Mr. Rinnie. Refreshments were handed round. A collection was taken up on behalf of the Cricket Club.
