I learn"that Mr X. O'Keefe, ex-pre-sident of the. Miners' Union, has expressed'the opinion that there should be opposition to the present member. Mr' MeGowan. and that if ;Mi* Lucas (whose name is mentioned in connection' with the seat) will not stand, he (Mr O'Keefe) will contest the seat himself.

Mr Ait-ten, Mayor of the city, has definitely decided not to offer "himself as a candidate at the general election. It is understood Mr D. J. Nathan, merchant, who, it was stated, would be on the Ministerial ticket for the city, has declined to come forward owing to business reasons.
