DEATH OF ARCHBISHOP CROKE.

LONDON, July 23

The death is announced of Dr. Croke, Archbishop of Cashel, and formerly Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckfland, New Zealand.

[The Most Rev. Thomas W. Croke, D.D.. Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cashel, was born near the town of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, in 1824. He went to Paris when a lad, and entered the Irish College. After a year in the College of Menin, in Belgium, he went in 1845 to the Irish College in Rome, where he remained nearly three years attending lectures and reading theology under the Jesuit Fathers Perrone and Passaglia. In 184 Che won the gold and silver medals, and in the following year took his degree as Doctor of Divinity, and was ordained priest, afterwards returning to Ireland. In 1865 he was appointed parish priest of Doneraile and Chancellor of the Diocese of Cloyne. In 1870 he became Bishop of Auckland, and remained here until 1874. In 1875 he was promoted to the Archiepiscopal See of Cashel. Of late years Dr. Croke had taken a prominent part in connection with the Land League and Irish Nationalist movements. While the Land League agitation was at its height he was summoned to Rome, and on his return to Ireland he at once publicly stated that he had returned from Rome "unchanged and unchangeable." For Auckland Diocese he did a great deal, and cleared from debt all of. the encumbered diocesan property, and he had since remitted large sums from his private purse to this diocese. His brother held a high position in the Church at San Francisco, and a sister is Superioress of an order of nuns at Bathurst, N.S.W.I
