STATE FIRE INSURANCE.
Sir, —In the course of the Hon. J. G. Ward's Budget speech on the Bth July, he is reported to have made use of the following language: —"It is, I take it, the duty of the Government to control and direct our public affairs in a manner that will promote, as far as possible, the best interests of the people, and to do so consistently with the policy which one may term 'safe.' " Within a week of the delivery of this speech, Sir J. G. Ward introduces, on behalf of the Government, "The State Fire Insurance Bill," a venture admittedly of a very risky and dangerous character. Will you kindly explain, Sir, how the hon. gentleman can reconcile such a contradiction?—l am, etc., A LONDONER.
