FIRE ON A BARQUE.
A telegram of Tuesday last published in the Sydney papers states that shortly after five o'clock that morning an outbreak of fire was discovered on the British barque Ruth well whilst moored at the Dyke opposite No. 5 crane, taking , in a cargo of coal for Callao. The discovery was made by the carpenter of the vessel, who on going to the fo'castle to got a hammer, saw smoke issuing from the forepeak, the hatch of which was down at the time. An alarm was raised, a-nd as the guns were iirt:J on Signal Hill, the harbour was at once acquainted with the fact that a ship was on fire- The tug Stoma iiing was soon alongside the Kuthwell with her pumping gear ready. On removing the hatchway, the outbreak, which had been smouldering, imiut.diately burst into iiame, but the volume of water which was dashed below soon quenched it. As soon as an examination could be made il was. found that the ship had a narrow escape, the forepeak being stocked with the usual inflammable part of a ship's stores—tar, grease, and a quantity of resin. The outbreak had occurred among some tailings between two casks of tar, whicli must have been almost on the point "ol igniting when the water was poured in. :
