Vagrancy.—An elderly man named William WilliaLms pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy, and.. was sent to gaol for a montn. On a charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged. An elderly woman named Mary Richards, charged with her third offence of drunkenness within six months and with being a rogue and a vagabond, was sent to gaol for six mf<nth3. Six Months.—Patrick Bedford, who admitted being discharged from gaol ten days ago, was charged with vagrancy (two charges) and with keeping a brothel in Durham-street, he.having been previously convicted of a similar offence. Accused pleaded guilty to the charges of vagrancy, and not guilty to the charge of keeping a brothel. After hearing the evidence of Mary Riley, Constable Skinner, and Sergeant Hendry, His Worship convicted accused and sent him to gaol for six months.

Theft of a Dog.—A heavily-built man named James Palmer, who said he was an old soldier, appeared to answer a charge of stealing an Italian greyhound dog, value £5, the property of Barbara Parker. Accused pleaded not guilty. The dog produced, was identified by Barbara Parker as her property. A la"d named Gamble deposed to accused giving the dog as payment for board in his father's house. Sergeant Hanson stated that accused told him that he was given the dog by a Mrs Dalziel.. Mrs Dalziel denied this statement. Accused gave evidence, in which he stated that the dog , followed him down Grey-street, and that he took carp of it and made it a present to the boy Gamble. Accused also stated that when requested to come forward and exonerate the boy he did so, and went and explained the matter to Mrs Parker. His Worship convicted accused. SulMnspector Mitchell said the man was a first offender, and a sentence of one month's imprisonment was . imposed.
