M GISBORNE, this daj> ", The weather is gloriously "fine tost the opening of the first section of thet railway towards Karaka, aiid there* are crowds of people in town. Tho streets are beautifully " decorated with flags and evergreens brought in profusion from the bush. At 9.30 a.m. a procession, in which the volunteers, by special permission, took part, was formed and marched through the town -to the station, where the school children were entrained. The Hon. J. Carroll, who Declared the railway open, was present-' ed with a gold key, and congratulatory speeches were made. A resolution was passed for telegraphing to the Governor conveying the sympathy] of the great meeting at the King's illness, and also resolutions of con?? gratulation, to be forwarded to th* Ministers for Public Works and Railways. •' _ ' ___J
