CITY ABATTOIRS.
At the meeting* of the City Council Jast evening a letter was received from Mr J. D. Eitchie, Secretary for Agriculture, who wrote acknowledging receipt' of the letter soliciting approval of the purchase of Messrs Salmon and Co.'s slaughter-house site at Mt, Eoskill for the site for city abattoirs. He enclosed an extract from the report upon Messrs Salmon and Co.'s premises, and said that considering the many disadvantages against the proposed site as set forth in the report (the gist of which has ken published), the Hon. the Minister was of opinion that the Council should endeavour to select a more suitable site nearer the railway and saleyards. He would be glad to hear the decision of the Council at as early a date as possible. The chief health officer, through the local Department of Health, wrote notifying the Council that he could not agree to the site selected by the Council.
The Mayor moved that the matter go to the Finance Committee.
Mr Hewson moved as an amendment that it go to the Legal Com--mittee in order that the Council's position might be defined.
_ Mr Patterson thought that the feeling of the people here should be of .grester importance than that of a few people in Wellington. He considered that the Council would soon be hi a similar position to that in Which the City Schools Committee >ere placed the other day. 'Mr Glover, in a vigorous speech, sjid he objected to the Government i?minatmg the Council. Mr Masefleld thought the letter stould he received, and that the Ctaneil should do nothing more in th| matter.
' Ihe letters were referred to the Legal Committee.
