OBITUARY.

MR C LA ROCHE

Mr* Charles La Roche died at his residence, Khyber Pass-road, on Saturday afternoon, after a very short ill;ness. Deceased had reached the age •of (52 years, and during his long public career in Auckland he made many friends, who will regret to hear of his decease! Mr La Roche was a Londoner. He came here 38 years ago in the ship Maxwell. Shortly afterwards he settled in the Grafton district, where he resided for 3B years. After that district was incorporated with the city, Mr La Roche for many years represented the Grafton ward on the Municipal Council, and in that capacity w-as also appointed a member of the Harbour Board. He also attended to oilier public duties, being a -justice of the peace, and also visitirig justice to the gaol. Mr La Tioche paid no less than five visits to the Old Country, his last trip being practically a tour round the world, and he was in China a few years ago. He also in his travels visited the United States and Canada, in addition to having more than one run round the Continent. Mr La Roche was an enthusiastic Mason, being a member of the English Constitution, Past Master of Lodge Eemuera, No. 1710, and also Provincial District Senior Grand Warden of the Auckland Provincial District Grand A Lodge. For many years Mr La Roche carried on business in this city, and was sufficiently successful to be able to retire about 18 years ago. Possessed of a genial manner, he made many frieuds, and as a public man he was a useful citizen. Deceased leaves four sons and five daughters to mourn their loss. Mr C. La Roche, engineer to the Harbour Board, is one of the sons. The interment takes place tomorrow.
