Tbe final for the championship of the Auckland Golf Club was played on Saturday afternoon. Messrs. Charles, and Harry Gillies had come through to the final, and an" interesting match was anticipated, although Mr. Charles Gillies was generally looked upon as likely to prove the winner. Some, however, remembering the form shown by Mr. H. Gillies in the_ New Zealand championship, were . prepared to see him put up a good game. The result proved otherwise, as Mr. C. Gillies won by 10 up with 9 to play. Mr. C. Gillies held the honour on the first round until the players reached the eighteenth hole. At the fourteenth hole Mr. C. Gillies was 10 up, and going strongly, so that even at this stage the match looked a foregone conclusion for him. The play does not call for any detailed description.. The winner played a good solid game, his putting being very good. He has quite recovered from his weakness' in this department of the game. Mr. H. Gillies stuck gamely to his disheartening task, and had some really hard luck, being stymied no less than six times in one round, twice at the same hole. The stymie has long been a sore point with golfers, and it does not really seem as though the game would suffer in any way if it were abolished. Certainly if this were done itwould eliminate one more element oi luck from the game, and the tendency in all ball games is to reduce them as .much as possible to absolute science.
