THE MAYOR'S ALLOWANCE.

The question as to the amount of allowance to His Worship the Mayor (Mr A- Kidd) for the ensuing- yearwas considered at the City Council last evening, and gave rise to some discussion. When the matter came to be considered, Mr Dignan was voted to the chair.

Mr A- E. Glover moved: "That the Mayor's salary be fixed at £350.','

Mr Masefield seconded. The pre--sent . Mayor, he said, spent money, and spared no expense in the interests of the city.

Mr ■Stichbury moved as an amendment that the salary be \ £300, the same as before. In doing so he said it was not right to.make the office of Mayor a paying one.

Mr Hannan seconded,

Mr Baume said they never paid the Mayor a salary, but an honorarium to cover expenses incidental to the office. All the city could give those who took the office of Mayor was honour, hard work and abuse. (A voice, "Hear, hear.") He recognised the great services of Mr Kidd to the city, but the increase should not be made in the present state of the finances. *

After some further discussion, the amendment fixing the salary at £300 was carried by 7 votes to 5.

On the Council's resolution being communicated to the Mayor, Mr Kidd said that he was glad to hear of it. He did not know what the discussion had been about, but if an increase had been agreed upon, he would not have accepted it- He did not know what had been going on, but those who might have voted for an increase did an injustice if they thought he would accept it.
