MANAWATU RAILWAY.

WELLINGTON. May 5.

Sir Joseph Ward, speaking at Masterton, on Saturday, at the opening of the new railway station, said the Government proposals were rejected on 7th April by the Manawatu Railway Company. The Company was then asked straight out whether it was prepared to sell the assets under the Act of last session, but it was not until May 1, when the Act expired, that the Company specially mentioned the conditions which it was prepared to place before the shareholders. Fair means would be used to bring grist to the Government line, and the means to be employed would do no harm to the farmers.
