THE COLONY'S FINANCES.
SURPLUS OF £270,489 FOR THE
YEAR,
WELLINGTON, May 5.
Sir Joseph Ward, in opening tho new railway station at Masterton' ott Saturday, referred to the finances of the colony for the past year. He stated that they showed a surplus of £270,489. The receipts were £0,175,403, and the expenditure £5,914,000. Included in the latter was £19,000 paid off debentures. The actual revenue exceeded the estimates by £34,000, while the expenditure was about £3000 below the estimate. In actual receipts the Customs showed an increase of £20,254, railways £148,847 t stamps £4736, land tax £18,251, income tax £5588, beer duty £5062, registration fees £5954, marine £1902, miscellaneous £7349. The singular briskness in trade had, he said, brouglit about the increases. The territorial revenue had decreased £20,584.
