We regret to learn of the death of Mr Charles Dench, formerly purser of the steamer Taviuni, which took place at Cambridge yesterday. He w ras for' very many 3 rears in the service of the Union Company, particularly in the Island trade. Deceased was very popular with his fellow officers and the public. Death resulted from consumption. The body will be sent to Dunedin for burial by the Te Anau, scaling for the South to-
morrow.
The Journal of the Department of Labour for May reports on the labour market in Auckland as- follows: —
"Building trades: Steadily busy. Engineering trades: An improvement on last month Good tradesmen supposed to be fully employed. Boot trade: Employers'report decided improvement; working full time. Clothing trade: Very busy. Employers state ilnable to avoid working overtime owing to insufficiency of hands. Retail trade (general)': Good. Unskilled labour: A falling-off of applicants, probably owing to workers who came, to town, and were disappointed in not getting work, returning to former occupations. Still a good number in town." The Journal contains a number of legal decisions, industrial agreements, and awards" in connection with- labour.
By advertisement in another column the residents of Devonport are requested to meet at the Council Chambers at 8 o'clock to-night to present a suitable testimonial to- Mr Malcolm Niecol, for the valuable services rendered to the borough for a great many years Mr E. W. Alison, the Mayor of Devonport, will preside. Mr Niecol has been a resident of Devonport for about 37 years, and in his public capacity has don^ yeoman service for the marine suburb.
The tender of Messrs E. Porter and Co. has been accepted by the Mount Roskill Road Board for the supply of cast-iron pipes, valves, etc., for water area contract No. 2. The price was £2430.
