THE GALE AT CAMBRIDGE.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM.

For the first time on record the' Cambridge School is closed owing to bad weather. A regular rblizzard prevailed here about 9 a.m.,. witlL frightful thunder and lightning, and haii. A furious gale is blowing. The lightning guards in the Post Office were fused, also the connecting straps. Several of the latter were shot out of their sockets with/ a re-, port like a gun. The office was filled with smoke. Trees have been uprooted all over the district, and telegraph poles, blown down. '• i..-' .... Mr Banks, of Gwyhhelands, had a windmill upset,%and the corners of three stacks blown.out. I expect, to hear of much more damage. ■. ;'• '
1 The installation of the Rev. E. J. McFarland as vicar of St. Barnabas' 1 parish takes place to-morrow. On Monday night a pleasing ceremony took place at the Police Barracks, when Inspector Cullen, on behalf of the local police force,, made a presentation , to ' Sergeant Murray; who is retiring from the' force to live at'Rotorua. The presentation consisted of a purse .of sovereigns, an,d Sergeant Murray responded in a very appropriate speech- Sergeant Murray has seen some- thirty, years service, in the armed-.constabulary and police force, and is a veteran of the Maori war. '. ... The results .of the half-yearly • pharmacy examinations show that1 Auckland has passed no less.than five-candidates for the two sections,. All these were coached by Mr D. Teed, who passed three in section B, and two in sectionA, out of the.-.seven'candidates he prepared.
