H.M.s. Midura arrived from Auckland : to-day. ■ .

EIGHT HOURS DAY

MELBOURNE, April 21

Mr Kingston gave orders under the Customs Act that no work on vessels was permitted owing to the Eight Hours' Day. The captain of the P. and O. Australia declined to obey, as he had to coal his vessel in order to sail to-morrow. A . lighter went alongside and commenced to place coal aboard. The Customs officer asked the men to cease work, but they declined. He then sealed the ship's bunkers, and stopped. operations. The captain is ■ liable to a penalty of £ 50.
