AMUSEMENTS.

THE POLLARD SEASON.

"THE GONDOLIERS.

The revival of "The Gondoliers" by the Pollard Opera Company last evening was one of the most successful productions of the season. Throughout the performance was a meritorious one, and it ran with remarkable evenness, each of the rolesbeing, capably filled. The many musical gems sprinkled through the opera were very 'tastefully rendered, and the chorusea were a good deal above the average. The Wtle rolDs, Marco and Guiseppe, the i Gondoliers, were in the hands of Mr' D.. O'Connor and Mr C. Carter, and both acquitted themselves well, their singing being, as usual, very good, while, both acted with the spirit and dash to be expected from their youth and station. Miss Nina Osborne made an excellent Tessa, acting with vivacity, anda singing with great success. Her solo "When a Merry j Maiden Marries " was a very pleasing item. The sister role of Gianetta was capably filled by Miss Lulu Evans, who v sang most agreeably, especially in "A Maiden's Heart." Miss Connie Buttel was admirably suited as Casilda, the daughter of the Duke of Plaza Toro. Her solos were perhaps the most successful ' items of the evening. She is the possessor of a clear rich soprano voice, and her ' numbers were rendered in a carefully finished style. Mjss Buttel has had too few opportunities during the present ssa- " son of displaying her abilities. Mr Hairy Quealey, as the Grand Inquisitor, had a. ; very congenial role, and he gave a very clever characterisation. He gave an ex- " cellent rendering of "No Possible Doubt Whatever." Mr J. Ralston, as Luiz, sang with much acceptance, particularly in the duet with Casilda in the first act, the r voices blending very nicely. Miss Marie Metcalfe was gopd as the- Duchess, •and-* the minor roles''were all well filled. "The Gondoliers" will be repeated to-night, and to-morrow night "Maritana" will be revived.
