ONEHUNGA FIRE BRIGADE.
A special meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, there being present His Worship the Mayor.Mr D. A. Sutherland, in the chair, and Crs. Colledge,Hill, Stoupe, Rishworth, Rowe, and Vause. The Mayor stated the meeting was called for the purpose of. receiving applications for and appointing a Fire Inspec-tor-for the borough, and also to make arrangements for enrolling a new brigade. Pour applications were received for the position of Fire Inspector, viz., Messrs J. W. Anderson and A. A. Lepine (Auckland), W. C. Hill (Ellerslie), and J. W. Stewart (Onehunga). Messrs Anderson and Lepine, being over the specified age, were disqualified, and on taking a ballot Mr Hill was unanimously elected, to take office from the Ist May next. The question of appointing a new brigade was discussed at length, it being stated that several eligible young men had expressed their -willingness to pom. Cr. Rowe considered that both the turncock and water inspector should be members of the new brigade, and, besides receiving the usual emolument, should be granted a bonus of £1 per annum. On the motion of Cr. Rowe, seconded by Cr. Hill, it was resolved to advertise in the "Star" and "Herald" for applications returnable by next Monday night for volunteers for a fire brigade on the terms stated. The Town Clerk reported that the late brigade had returned their uniforms and accoutrements to the Council.
One tender was received for removing the flrebell, -that being- from Mr S. Barr at £12; but as the price was considered too high it was agreed to have the work done by the borough workmen.
