The annual meeting1 of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be held in the Council Chambers at 4 o'clock next Thursday. His Excellency Lord Ranfurly will preside, and a large attendance of those interested in the good work performed by the Society is anticipated.

Speaking before the Victorian Commission yesterday, Mr. G. A. Coles, president of the New Zealand Federated Boot Manufacturers, said that the difficulty in the regulation of wages in the boot manufacturing trade was that of foreign competition, and the adjustment of the Board with regard to wages should be made so that competition could be combated. In answer to the Hon. Sternberg he said that manufacturers were now importing machines from America, and when this was thoroughly mastered by the operatives no doubt they would be able to successfully compete with the' imported. In fact, some retailers were now selling some locally-made boots as American. Tn his own firm two-thirds of the manufactures were on American lines.

A meeting of the. executive committee of the Municipal Association of New Zealand will be held at the City Council offices, Wellington, on Monday. May 5, at two o'clock, to make arrangements for the bi-annual conference to be held during the Parliamentary session.
