COUNTESS OF RANFURLY'S CUP.
The second annual competition for the cup presented two years ago" to the First Battalion Auckland Infantry (Countess of Ranfurly's Own), by the Countess of Ranfurly, was held on Saturday afternoon at the Penrose Rifle range; The cup was presented to encourage field firing, and the result of Saturday's match Bhows what room for improvement there is jirthat class of firing. The Victoria Rifles won the cup at the first competition, and on Saturday again asserted their superiority by putting up a total of 33 points, the College Rifles coming second with 10 points. There were five targets 2ft square, on which was painted, the silhouette of a man's head and shoulders. The conditions were 10 shots at 30Oyds. standing, kneeling, or lying,, each team to consist of 20 men, unaer a noncommissioned officer. The teams competing were:—No. 1 Natives, 20 men, Serjjt. Reid; Newton Rifles, 12 men, ColourSergrt- Parker; College Rifles, 13 men, Sergt Cullen; No. 3 Natives, 20 men, Colour-Sergt. Smith; No. 2 Natives, 20 men, Sergt. Fricker; Gordon Rifles, 20 men. Colour-Sergt. Mclntosh; Victoria Rifles, No. 1 team, 20 men, Colour-Sergt. Aylett: Victoria Rifles, No. 2 team, 20 men, Sergt. Cooper. A good muster of the battalion went out by train ■ under Major A- M. Myers, to Penrose, where Lieut.-Colonel White, who was supervising the shooting, took command. Battalion Sergt.-Major Mclntosh had charge at the butts, and Captain and Adjutant F. E. N. Gaudb assisted at the firing point. . Shortly after four p.m. His Ex cellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, accompanied by Lady Constance Knox and Captain Boscawen, A.D.C., arrived at the range, and were received with a general salute. The Victoria Rifles were just completing th« competition, and His Excellency watched the firing. While the scores were being calculated, His Excellency and Lady Constance Knox partook of afternoon tea, provided by Mrs. fc-ouis Myers, mother of Major Myers, assisted by the Misses Rose Myers and Ka.te Nelson. Lady Constance was presented by Miss Ruby Coleman with a beautiful shower bouquet, to which were attached. red white and blue ribbons, on which was worked " No. 1 Auckland Infantry Battalion," " The Countess of Ranfurly s Own," and coronets. The men were meanwhile drawn up in a hollow square, and the results announced were as follows:—Victoria Rifles, No 1 team, Colour-Sergt. Aylett, Corporals Jackson and Kerr, Privates Bullen GfbsoD.
