TURF, TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, this day,

The price paid lor iruimen was iioj,

lirucuorm xeri for Wellington on Xiiursday in charge of R. toaaon. o<reat aisdppointment is expressed here tnat there is no ciuuict: now or a nit;etiiij;- with Nouttte. ane Canterbury contingent were booking to the presence of the Auckland champion to make a dividend for them on urueiiiorjn.

Clmord's team, Wind Whistle, Golden Mere, Gienaladaie and Cannie (jhlel have leit for Wellington. Tne two-year-old Teicelet remained behind, so tnat fc>ir Ueorge Clifford will not be represented in the juvenile events.

Red Uauntiet' and Glenaladale are the popular selections locally for the Thompson Handicap.

Jj'lekti, who is in great nick, has also left lor the North.

Magnificent evidently dislikes heavy going, and was beaten most decisively in c«oth his engagements at Timaru. Cerise and .blue is being spelled, but Hobbs' others are being kept in active work. Cora Linn is very well.

With no local meetings im.minent, sporting matters are very dull. Word has been received here that the Egmout Racing Club has removed the disqualification of W. Holmes as from the 25th of May of this year. As Holmes can still ride at 7.5, and is a capable horseman, he should soon be as prominent on our racecourses as ever he was. Taken as a whale, the trotting at Plumpton Park on Thursday was rather tame. Impulse opened with an easy win in the Trial Hack, and Coin, a promising two-year-old, made short work of the opposition in the pony race. The Hornby Handicap, a two-mile saddle event, produced a fine struggle. At the end of the first mile, Senator, St. George, Whisper and Carl were together. Senator and Carl broke once or twice, but a great race ensued over the last mile. Senator got in front a hundred yards from home, and won by two lengths from St. George Whisper breaking a few lengths from the post. The Bracelet was mainly notable for the number of horses whicn held the lead in turn, and for the fact that each in turn broke on getting to the front. Ashcat, the pinner, Is possessed of a fair amount of pace and should ao better later on. Little I rtncess made a show of everything in tho Plumpton Handicap, a two-mile harness trot. Cottage Boy, a Dunedin horse, was? favourite, but started unsteadily. In the last half mile, however, he showed wonderful pace, and secured second place. Federation was a hot favourite for the Electric Handicap, and never lett the issue in doubt. The day's sport end ed with the Dash Handicap, in which there were two new aspirants for mile honours in Peri Huon and Explanation. Starting off the limit, they cleared out from the rest of the field, being within a length of one another all the way. Peri Huon, the winner, is by St. Louis, and both he and Explanation • look like improving a lot. The time put up In this race was very fast, as the course was very dead.
