DEATH OF LORD KIMBERLEY.
LONDON, April 9. The death is announced of the Earl of Kimberley, ag-ed 76.
[The deceased nobleman, the Right Hon- John Wodehouse, K.G., First Earl of Kimberley, was a prominent British diplomatist and statesman. He was born in 1826, and succeeded his • grandfather as third Baron Wodehouse in 1846, being raised to the Earldom of Kimberley in 18(i6. In 1552 he was appointed tinder-Secre-tary of State for Foreign Affairs, and held the post till 1856, when he was sent as Envoy-Extraordinary to Russia. Returning rronr Russia in ISSB, he ag-ain became Under-Seere-tary for Foreign Affairs, under Lord Palmerston, and held the position till 1861. In 1864 he was appointed Under-Seeretary for india, and later on became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, resigning the post in July, 1866. He was afterwards taken into Mr Gladstone's Administration, and was Secretary of State for the Colonies from 18*70 to 1574. when Mr Gladstone retired. In 1880, when Mr Gladstone's party returned, he was re-appointed to that position, and in 1882 he became Secretary of State for India, remaining in that important position till 1885, and, being reappointed to it on the formation of Mr Gladstone's third Government in 1886. In 1592 he again accepted the position of Secretary of State for India, and afterwards became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He was leader of the Liberal party in the House of Lords in 1597. His heir is Lord Wodehouse, who was born in 1848.] .
