IMPERIAL DEFENCE SCHEME.
(Received 10.20 a.m.)
SYDNEY, this day. News has been received by the American mail regarding the Empire defence scheme. It is looked upon by the "Telegraph" as an attempt to force Imperial Federation. The same paper says there is ominously good reason to suspect that an early effort will be made to bring1 an undesirable and unwise idea of defence federation into practical shape. It is none too soon for emphatic Australian repudiation of the scheme, which will impose galling- limitations on self-government and introduce a militarism which is most obnoxious.
