WELLINGTON'S FRUIT MARKET
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
A business man who is now in Wellington says he has been astonished at the abundance of good fruit on sale in this city. He considers the
prices at which it can be purchased j compare very favourably with those ! ruling in many of the large centres i in Australia. Wellington, was certainly never so well supplied with fruit as it is at the ipresent time. The , auction rooms in the city have of | late been glutted with apples, pears', j and quinces, and unfortunately for ! the growers the prices realised have j as a rule been lower than in previous j seasons. As an instance of how some j orchardists have fared, on a line of 150 cases of fruit sent to Wellington for sale, the Auckland grower received 13/2 from the auctioneers after
freight, commission, etc., bad been-de-ducted, and out of that small sum lie had to reckon the cost of the cases. Of course, many .growers have done much better than that, but the great majority of settlers have made very little profit out of their fruit this year.
